Spoiler Alert is a runner game that was released in 2014. It was developed by Megafuzz, and published by TinyBuild Games. It was originally released for PC and came with two versions. One being the standard version for $2.99 and the other is the special version for $7.99. The special version just has extra features in it. The game came with a level editor integrated with the Steam workshop, so people can make their own levels. However other ports such as the Android version would lack this. This brings us to the most recent port, the Switch version, which was released in 2019 for $4.99, however, I got it on sale for ten cents. There are a lot of mobile ports that clog the Switch Eshop, however, I like to keep an open mind, and not just judge something based on where it came from.
Spoiler Alert is a typical runner game, but with one gimmick that makes it interesting. You play the game in reverse, meaning you start at the end of the game, and have to rewind back to the beginning of the game. This means you revive bosses, uncollect coins, and heal enemies. You can’t collect, or kill enemies since that creates a time paradox, which is death. You also can’t do anything that will normally kill you. There are three main worlds in the game with each one having 30 levels. Each world has a power-up gimmick on some level. World one gives you a powerup to catch fireballs, while World two gives you a powerup to slide. There are also ten additional bonus levels, and a speed run mode, that seems to come from the PC special version.
This game is cool, it does it’s gimmick well, and I enjoyed playing it. There is a small amount of challenge to be had, but it’s never unfair. I really love the soundtrack as well. However, I do have some issues with the game. The interference was ported over and isn’t the best when using the controller, however, you can use the touchscreen to control the game, which feels good for the most part. There is one issue however, in the world that you have the slide powerup, you can’t jump easily. Jumping requires the tap of the screen, but sliding also requires tapping the screen. Wrong inputs will occur. The bonus world also feels rushed. It’s just ten stages, with reskinned elements, and I’m not proud of it, could've been handled better.
Do I recommend Spoiler Alert on Switch for five dollars? No, I don’t, because the game is too short. I beat in less than an hour on my blind playthrough. There are rankings, and achievements for people who care for those things, but the game should’ve been longer, especially with the lack of a level editor. This is why if you get t his game at full price, I would get the standard Steam version. It’s cheaper and has a level editor integrated with the Steam Workshop, so people can make their own levels, and share them with the world. If you want the Switch version, just wait for it to go on sale again. Researching MegaFuzz has been interesting, and I can’t deny that for a game made by mostly two people, it’s really impressive. I hope to see more games from them in the future.
